THE EPISTLE.
This short passage from the Epistle to the Philippians has one sentence that challenges attention the moment we read it: "For our. conversation is in heaven." The word conversation ladavery much wider meaning than it has now, In the Bible it is used for conduct, manner of life, and in one passage in the Epistle to the Hebrews, cven life itself. Yet none of these readerings would meet the
case here. The Revised Version trans-

this does not quite convey in English the exact meaning of the Greek. Had we only not lost through our penurious political conceptions the use of the good old English word* Commonwealth,' we could have had in our English Version an exact parallel to the original Greek word. We belong to a Commonwealth which is a heavenly and not an earthly state, and while we tread this earth our minds must be lifted up in a never-ending effort to see the facts of life from a heavenly mount. This is no easy task, and again and again failure will dim the eyes of him who tries it. Yet, as the Apostle St. Paul well knew, there is no alternative for man, if bis life is to be kept fresh and sweet and whole- some St Paul draws a picture of those who will not try and live as citizens of a heavenly kingdom, and very sombre are its shadows, They are enemies of the Cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. They are like creatures, who prefer to live in a cave, when the bright sunshine and sweet breezes beckon them
But man has yet a greater from its gloomy recesses. For them no spirit of adventure stirs the Creditor than the world. On his blood, no sense of mystery kin-entry into life he is endowed with dles their imagination, there is no some capital that comes to him strength in the soothing thoughts direct from God. There is indeed that spring out of human suffering a sense in which all that he enjoys or 'in the faith that looks through for a time, may be said to be a loan obtained. death.' Upon them the wonders from God. A lamp-post in London, can you imagine anything more common place-yet even lamp-posts some times wear the badge of Romance. There are no earthquakes or ty- phoons in London to uproot them, there they have stood for many years lighting the way for pedestrians, many of them having been tapped by the great Dr. John- son's stick when he took his walks abroad, for it is said that one of his eccentricities was to touch ench All claims against the steamer must lamp-post and if he absently forget before the 18th inst, or they will not be presented to the Undersigned on or one, to retrace his steps and remedy the mistake!
