ed to hear that the Gramophone Company some time ago succeeded] in making records of the songs of the nightingale, the blackbird, and the thrush. No doubt it was very clever to do it, and one bears without surprise that much time and great patience were needed to overcome in the bird mind the natural terror of the noise of the mechanism. They were captive birds, of course, and in the end they did sing into the heartless trumpet. The results are said to be good, and the records may be enjoyed by people who prefer to sit in a room and listen to n machine rather than to go out into the woods. The records are used, in teaching children what is known as nature study in schools.

Note.

One feature of the Note of the An.bassadors' Con- ference on the Italo-Greek dispute deserves attention, not for its political but for its linguistic achievement. The first sentence runs to thirty-one lines of type- script, and contains the word note" four times and "noting" once. It starts, in the official The Conference of British text;-

Anibassadors having taken note of the Note which the Greek Govern ment sent to it in reply to its own Note respecting (&c.) ... taking note more especially of the fact (&c.)... noting in this respect that (&c.) considering that (&c.)... decides to demand (&c.)." It is a considerable strain on the memory to remember all the subordinate clauses which lead up to the main verb, and there are eighteen verbs, not counting in- finitives and the like, in the sen tence. It might be given to school- boys, not as a model of English, but as a puzzle in syntax, Servants' Epitapha.

The word Servant has appeared on many tombstones erected by grateful masters and mistresses, often joined with the word "friend."

"I am not a candidate for any- thing. I can't imagine myself to- day accepting any nomination. Of course, I can't say, and no intel- ligent man can say, what I will do to-morrow. There might be a war, or some crisis of the sort, in which legalism and constitutionalism and all that wouldn't figure, and the nation wanted some person who could do things and do them quick. What I would do then I can't say. But there isn't any such situation now. I haven't a political mind, and I don't see any sense in my attempting any political leader ship."

When the Royal party catered and a cordon of police wheefed across It will not matter in the age to the great hall to prevent the crowd from following, I stepped over the rope and joined the Royal proces- sion. As it happened, the police manoeuvre had cut off one of the party-a French Minister of State, who, knowing no word of English, made futile endeavours to explain his misfortune. I took his place.
