STEPHEN REYNOLDS.
REVELATION OF A
CHARACTER.
It is more than four years since Stephen Reynolds died, but in terest in such books of his as "A Poor Man's House" is still active, and admirers of his works will welcome this volume of his letters
"Letters of Stephen Reynolds" (Hogarth Press, 16s.)-which has been edited, with an introduction, by Mr. Harold Wright.
Reynolds's letters are full of his vigorous, touchy, and humane personality. He was a man who produced some really remarkable books and then more or less abandoned literature in order to throw hintself into the cause of the West-country fishermen. Indeed, his death, early in 1919, was the result of his unremitting labours. throughout the war to keep the fishing industry together.
His letters reflect very thoroughly the interests he had at heart, The earlier ones will be more attractive to the general public, who know fm through his books, because they are largely about his books, whereas the later ones deal mainly with fishery questions.
EXTREME FRANKNESS.
The charm of these letters is in their extreme frankness. In send- ing a copy of one of his works to a fisherman he writes:
I don't suppose you'll like every- thing in the book. Nobody likes everything in any book. I can find faults in it myself now I see in print. One can't paint high
