BONIN ISLANDS NAVAL BASE.

SINGAPORE JUSTIFIED,

(Reuter's Service to the China Mail.)

LONDON, June 8. The Saturday Review, commenting on the debate in the House of Lords over the Singapore base says' that Lord Salisbury's reference to a power in the Far East which might not always be friendly was to Japan who, as was not generally known in England, rushed the completion secretly of a great naval base at the Bonin Islands before the Washington-con- ference.

The paper. emphasises that the situation at Singapore invites cooperation from all the units in the Empire East of Suez and means should be found for their paying in common for this insurance by a rate levied on Empire shipping using Eastern waters.. The paper hopes the matter will be dis- cussed and arranged by the Imperial conference..

The Bonin Islands are three groups in the North. Pacific, 500 miles from Japan. They were claimed As an illustration of Germany's poverty, the by the Japanese and by them called Ogasawarajitna. ITALY'S AIMS.

PUSHING NATIONAL INTERESTS..

REPARATIONS ATTITUDE.

ROME, June 8.

In the Senate Signor Mussolini stated that the Government intended energetically to safeguard national interests and remedy the position of “in- feriority in which Italy had been placed by the peace treaties excluding her from economic and colonial benefits. Nevertheless the Government desir ed very speedily to normalise the European situa tion. He outlined the cardinal points of the Gov- ernment policy as follows:-

(3) The total of reparations must be fixed far short of the original figure,

(2) Italy could not consent to territorial change likely to lead to a political, economic and military hegemony,

די~

3) Italy was ready to contribute to the sacrifices if necessary.

Signor Mussolini agreed with Mr. Bonar Law's reparations figure of fifty milliard gold marks but differed regarding the method of allocation.
