It is amazing what a world-wide interest there is in the sporting chance and mammoth sweepstakes in particular.
Every week the editor of the Sporting Times London, says a writer in that paper, finds his post- bag full of letters from men and women from the Orkneys to far Mesopotamia-clamouring for in- formation about the Calcutta and the newer Irish sweepstakes. It is obviously impossible to give satisfactory answers in every case What is happening to the Calcutta Sweep?
We have already suggested that doubtless many wonder why such a sweepstake has existed all these years, despite the "anti" legista tion throughout our Empire against a lottery in any disguise. The authority quoted puts the whys and wherefores in a nutshell when he explains that: "
The reason is that it is purely a club sweep, against the operation of which existing Indian legislation has no power. The Turf Club recognises no holder of a ticket other than the member or stand member of the club-the purchaser of the ticket whose name appears thereon,

This is a method which can be worked all right in a small office or private sweepstakes; but if a fact, it must be the beginning of the end of the Calcutta Sweep as a world- wide event of importance. It would certainly lead to the public being unable to get their finger in the pie at all, and to the value of the prizes dwindling down to a sum which might not compare favourably with the amounts to be won in the Stock Exchange or big private club and exchange sweeps in London and Liverpool.
