• Lord incherpe, when presented with the Arbroath recently, gave #onal teminiseruCIA:
"Lord Inchcape said he acquired the rudiments his butiness train- ing in the office of his revered lord and master, the late Mr. Francis Webster li hnd the magnificent salary of the first year, £10 the second, and i10 the third, but there was compensation for the meagre salary in the long office hours. They begun at nine a.m. and wele supposed to finish at sight a.m., but it was more frequently ten or eleven at uight before the allice closed,
The instructions I get trom Mr. Webster on the first morning I er. tered bi office were brief and to the point. He called me into his room, which entered with fear and trem. bling, and he said, "Now. Jeemis, you are to du na you are bidden and not word must go out of the office either black or white."
1 edeavoured to serve that sule during all the time I was under hie and other people's orders, either ja businpes or in Government ser vice, and I shall always be grateful to Mr. Webster for instilling into me 8 sound principle, which, I, too, have tried to pass on to those who in te course of time have become respon. sible to me.
Perhaps I roight before 1 sit down eny a word or two to thoes who are about the age which I was when I left Arbroath, in 1573, jost ffty years ago. Let me recommend them nottub afraid to go out into the world. There is no acopa in Scotland for the energy, the brains, the initiative, and the ambition of all the youth of the country, but England and the rest of the British Empire, China, the United States, South America, are full of opportunities for well educated hard-working, percevering, eelf-deny ing, intelligent, ambitious, and honest Bootamen, and if there is no prosp, et for you here the sooner you get away the better. There is an idea abronú that there should be nothing more than forty.two or forty-eight hours work a week, and that the other 126 or 120 hours should be devoted to rest and recreation,
**I am within the mark when I say that my average week for the last fifty years has not been forty eight hours it has been nearer or has excede ninety-tight bours a week. But I have locked on work as re creation, aot as drudgery, and certain Jy hall the time I have spent a work: has been either in trying to make money for other people of 1 the service of the State. My experi enco is that there is no greater plea
ure in this world than that which is derived from work. Occupation is the cheapest form of amusement you can get, idleners is the most expen sive. It's not work that kills—it i», worry, and if you bave lots of work, I don't care what kind of work it is!
long na it keeps you recupied and Sou do it conscientiously, you will | have pleasure in it and you won't bave time to worry.”

POFMS.
Marjorie Pickthall's sturdy novel, The Bridge, is reviewed in this zone. "Marjoria Pickthall's death seri pusly impoverishes cut literature,

Marjorie Pickthall's poems shine with a steady, quiet light. It is by small boly of lyrics that she will be chiefly remembered, and at will perhaps remain an open ques on whether sin bad the power #o con tract a work of sustained mot on, though with The Wood Careers Wife before as it seems probable that she had. The spirit ☎ her poems is almost alwayr eligious even where, the subject is mot aplietly so,”

The Daily News thinks the note is. chiefly a warning to France.
The Daily Chronicle suggests that a partial general cancellation of European debt might be possible oven without America, if France was in the mood.
The Morning Post derply deplores the unte, which it says will annoy America and unke France despair. The news- paper condemus applying charity in equal doses to France and Germany.

The driving wheels refused to grip the fog damped rails, and the train slipped back with in- creasing momentum. The driver of the second train saw the runway approach- ing and applied his brakes, but was un- afe to avoid the crash.
