The Official Receiver: What did you consider at the time of your father's death your income would be-About £75,000 a year. He had not received that income. He said he thought that in the year after his father's death he received from £7,000- to £10,000. Ho agreed that the reason for this was that his father Had entered into heavy commitments in regard to Covent Garden Estate.

Sir Thomas said that he proceeded with the opera business, but he knew that opera was a heavily losing business in England. It was his hobby. Between the date of his father's death and the end of 1918 bis loss on opera undertakings had been £64000, and the interest on money borrowed in connection with the undertakings was, a total loss of £104,000. On April 1, 1918; the Sir Thomas Beecham Opera Co., Ltd., was formed, and after that he did not personally incur any losses.

As to the Covent Garden Estate: Sir Thomas said that this original pur- chase price was 21 millions, £500,000 bad ben paid before his father's death, and all excent £500,000 had since been paid, partly by the sale of sportion of the estate. Sir Thomas said that his income was increased in. 1920 to £20,000 a year. He-house- hold and personal expenditure for the last three years had not exceeded £5,000 a year, the balance having gone to reduce Lis liabilities.

The examination was adjourned.
