GERMAN AMBITIONS.
SPECIAL INTERVIEW WITH HAMBURG
SHIPOWNER,
[Intercating light was thrown on the situation in Germany and its relation with British and other shipping interests in the course of a special interview given to the Continental editor of The Journal of Commerce by Herr Boeger, the managing director of the Deutsche Austral Line and Kosmos Line, Hamburg, a prominent German shipowner, who holds im- portant official posts in several shipping organisation in Germany.]
Herr Bouger referred to the fact that for twenty-five years before the war the companies which be directs had the most friendly relations with the British lines engaged in the same trade. He looks forward to the rapid re-establishment of this understan ding. There was no' written agree- ment between the British and German companies engaged in the Australian trade before the war, but there was a perfectly honourable understanding, he said, that the English lines would look after the trade between Great Britain and Australia and the German lines the trade between the Continent and Australia. In this way Germany built up a big volume of shipping trade in the raw products of Australia, which it brought to the markets of Central Europe.
"At present we are only waiting for the moment when Australia will follow the suit of other countries, and open her doors again to German trading interests," said Herr Boeger. "Bye-and-by I think that they will come to see reason, just as Japan, the United States, and Great Britain bave already seen. Funnily enough, al- though there is a Labour Govern- ment in Australia they fail to see that a flourishing trade with Central Europe, and markets there for their vast national products, wool, grain, meat, fruits, and metals, are the only means of curing their unemployment and bringing prosperity to the
country.
