Civil Service won the toss and opened with Sayer and de Rome. In the first over the latter retired, help- ing a fast off break from Davies on to his wicket. Fincher coming in seemed indisposed to score, being apparently satisfied to see Sayer do it, and the score was raised to 45 before he put one up to cover point. Dunkeley arrived and saw his captain getting thoroughly busy, and reach his half century before he also skied one.

The remainder of the innings amounted to nothing but Sayer was properly set and cleverly manoeuvring to get the bowling, which he punished unmercifully. Commencing to bat at 4.25, the Ginners were dowise daunted by the ecore against them, or the already failing light. Davies and Olliver led the attack versus Ling and Reed; and carried the score to 66 before Davies atuck all his lege in front. Chester helped up to 116, and then his legs also got in the way. The light was now very bad but the innings went merrily on until time was called with the total standing at 174 for 5 wickets, made in an hour and 25 minutes. Edmonds took 4 wickets at a good average.
The game was an excellent one on both sides, and, from a spectator's point of view, exhilarating. The return match will be looked forward to with much interest.

sing the Sailors' acore to 11.
'It was a good game, and on the 7play, the Club did not deserve to lose 0 so heavily.
