LOSSES OF MERCHANT

VESSELS.

FULL STATISTICS.

For the first tim since the ter- mination of the war full statistics of the losses suffered by the merchant vies of the world owing to ordinary. marine risks have now been issued by Lloyd's Register. From these it appears that, during 1920, a total of 561 vessels, making collectively; 646,603 tona were lost from what may Je described as natural causes, in order to distinguish them from the losses due to nemy a tion during the course of the war. The above mentioned figures include 357 steamers of 510,794 gross tons in the aggregate, and 201 sabing vessels, making 134,809 net; tobs together, and they refer only to vessels of 100 tons gross or over in the case of steamers and net in the cuse of smiling vessels. Confining our at- tention for the moment, to steam ressols, we find, as might be expected, that in this class of shipp ng the United Kingdom is the chief sufferer, the British mercantile marine having Lost 80 steamers with a total gross tonnage of 123,863.
