BLACK PARACHUTES FOR SPIES

AT NIGHT.

The fact that black parachutes were usad for dropping spies at night behind the German lines was one of the secret of the war disclosed by "Commodore E. M. Maitland who accompanied R34 on her Atlantic flight-fía the course of a lecture at the Royal Society of Arts.

A parachute travelled, at the rate of 15 feet a second, and landed you with a weight equivalent to a jump of four to five feet.

During the war, said Commodore. Maitland, 750 English officers and 800 Frenchmen saved themselves from burning balloons by means of para chutes. Had the war lasted a little longer parachutes would have been fitted to all aircraft.

Commodore Maitland then describ- ed the journey in R34 Owing to weather conditions they thought att one time they would make the fight without catching sight of the sea.

They carried with them two carrier pigeons, which thus flew the Atlantic without fying. One was so humiliat-
