If the second defendant had attempted to export the contra- band, then it was obvices that he knew of the presence of the contra- band on board, and that being so, he must assume all responsibility in the matter. The second. defendant was discharged at the previous hearing because he had held that he knew nothing about the matter.
Inspector Willis asked for permis- sion to call the second defendant to give evidence against the first.
The second defendant was put în the witness box.

"UTTER IMPOSSIBILITY."
PARIS, November 23.
A semi-official message points out that the Greek Government will be unable to shelter behind the Chamber if it knows before hand that the results of the referendum have not been accepted. It proceeds to show that the objections to Constantine's return are based on five treaties be- tween 1827 and 1864 under which France and Britain jointly with Russia are constituted the protecting powers of Greece and the guarantors of her independence. The scari-ofEcial message refers to the utter impossibility of France and Britain permitting the restoration of the ex-King whose past only too clearly foreshadows his future attitude. They cannot permit interference again by the Hohenzollerns ir Greek affairs which would disturb the order and equilibrium of Eastern Europe.
NO FORCE TO BE USED.
Examined by the Magistrate, the witness said that he was in charge of the junk at the time the police searched it. When the ammunition was discovered, he was sent for and saw the contraband. He pointed out the first defendant to the police as the occupier of the cabin.
Mr. Mason: I submit that this man's evidence is not worth having Worship threatened him at the pre- now, in view of the fact that your vious bearing to convict him if he did not produce evidence against my client.
The Magistrate: I think you should leave it to me to decide if his evidence is worth taking or not.
