Mr. Craddock pictures, the large industrial centre of "Maswich," with its slums, as having built a печ school, consisting of one-storeyed. well-ventilated buildings situated in the sylvan. surroundings of a pleasant country-siće near to " Maswich. **
Describing a supposed visit. Mr. Craddock says:—
"A boy and a girl were working side by side at a blackboard, he draw ing a map of England, and she insert- ing names of historical importance.
A small group turned with interest the pages of a big volume illustrating! costumes of the period under study, and on the verandah outside half a dozen children were rehearsing a play! of their own composition dealing with Mary Queen of Scots. There were no desks or benches in the room, their! place being taken by tables and chairs. Here were flowers in abundance. Conversation there was and move-i ment and now and then a laugh, but no noise of feet and no scraping-of chair legs. The children all were jutc-[ soled canvas shoes, and the chair legs, slid quietly on domes of silence over the polished wood Boors. Boys and girls alike wore some sort of overall, patched and darned often, but dull or dirty in colour: never. Classes govern themselves through an elected committee empowered to punish and. reward, and the committee in each of i the higher standards nominates two of i its members to serve on the school; committee, a body responsible to the school
for discipline in general. The mance training is extremely practical. In the laundry, for exam ple, the 5th standard girls were wash- ing the towels and overalls used by standards 2. 3. and 4. Girls of the 7th standard were helping in the pre- paration of the school dinner for 250 other children. The boys of standard 6 were gardening with energy." The vegetables they were cultivating would appear in the menu of the whole school in the following week. The boys of standard 7 were to be engaged that afternoon in the wood work shop. doing such school repairs as were suited to their strength and inexperi-
In an interview the head master explained his ideas of school manage- ment as follows:-"We work for one another in the garden and the laun dry. the workshop and the kitchen. in order that we may appreciate our dependence the one upon the other. Our children govern themselves,' so that they may know something of civic virtues and social dangers. of the privileges and right use of freedom. We give to every class a home of its own, and the children learn to what extent they can ensure their owa material comfort and happiness."
