MEDITERRANEAN FLEET CONCENTRATING.

MALTA, JUDE 21.

The second battalion, Essexs, is under orders to leave as soon as possible on the light cruiser Cardiff, which is ready to embark the battalion for Constantinople. All available destroyers are likewise sailing eastward to-morrow, the cruiser Blenheim following. All ships of the Fourth and First battle-squadrons are already in the Eastern Mediterranean, except the Centurion. The battleship Ceres is now proceeding thither. Apparently. the entire Mediterranean Fleet is concentrating in the Near and Middle East.

The total issued capital, including pre- ference share and debentures, amount- ed to £1,750,000 and during the war its entire production was used by the Admiralty. Sites have been purchased at Port Melbourne, Sydney, and Fremantle for the erection of bunkering stations, and they will be completed, it is expected, by the end of the year. The cost will ap proximately be £100,000, the whole scheme, which includes the erection of similar stations in other dominions beyond the sea, being estimated at £1,200 000. The amount may reach $2,600,000. One of the main reasons for the immediate construction of the Australian stations is that the princi- pal steamship lines. trading with Australia have decided to use oil instead of coal fuel, as soon as the stations are completed. There will be ample supplies of oil in Australia ✨. for those purposes. The Company owns a fleet of 300,000 tons and some of its ships will at once be directed to supply the Australian stations.
