The ship to carry, the British Im perial Expedition to the Antarctic will be fitted, with semi-Diesel cil engines, which are the gift of Sir Wm. Beardmore, Bart. During the expedition extensive use will be made of the aeroplanes, and Sir Wm. Beard- more is chairman of the Scottish P section of the Royal Aeronautical Society. The expedition, which will be under the command of Mt. J. L. BA, F.R.GS. Cope,

Oil engines have never before been used in Antarctic exploration, and it is estimated that the ship, which will carry sufficient fuel for the whole four years over which the expedition is planned to extend, will have a radius of action 2 times greater than would be given by coal. Temperature diffi culties in the aeroplane wil be: guarded against by enclosing the complete power system in an in- sulated chamber. So far as the main structure is concerned, experi- ence in Norway, North Russia, and to Gratifi in Delow it. 15 in.
