ENGLISHWOMAN'S
PENCHANT
CHINESE ARES FOR DIVORCH
An interesting divorce case, out of the ordinary, was heard recently be fore Justice Horridge in Löndun The petitioner was a Chinese who prayed for separation from his wife, Can Englah waaran named Marle Whitfield. The corespondent was also a Chinese.
Mr. Justice Horridge: The woman must have a special fancy for China- men!
Mr. Tyndale appeared with Mr. J. A. Skinner for the petitioner; and Mr. A. W. Goodman for the respoad- -ent.
Neither the respondent nor the .co-respondent gave evidence, and the suit was therefore undefended.
Mr. Tyndale, in opening the case, said that the petitioner, Chang Ping.. was born in Cantan, and from 1908 he was a ship's steward on the Glen Line. In 1916, when the U-boat cam- paign was acute, Chang Ping took up employment as a butler
The petitioner had married Marie Whitfield on May 19, 1920, at St. Peter's, Limehouse, and they lived together in Gill-street, Limehouse, and one child, Winifred, was born to them. The petitioner left his wife at that address when he took up his duties as a buller. Adultery after that date took place between thei respondent and the co-respondent.
The petitioner, who was in smart European dress, had some difficulty in taking the oath.
PERHAPS PREFERS A SAUCER. The learned Judge suggested that bs might, pertaps, prefer to be sworn
on a saucer.
Mr. Tyndale. No, my Lord, he prefers to be sworn in the English fashion.
The petitioner, however, seemed unable to repeat the words of the oath as spoken by the asher, and Mr. Justice Horridge repeated the words of the oath very slowly and carefully, and the petitioner repeated them in broken English.
The petitioner then said that he was 14 years of age, and came from Canten in 1908, and he intended to make England his home, The co! respondent knew that the respondent was married to him.
