SALE OF PONIES.

A good crowd lined the rails at the Race Course. this morning, a large -number of ponies being tried out. A feature of the morning was the sale of three ponies, Louza. Sinza and Spotted Sand, the property of the late Mr. B. D. Kapleyn, The sale was conducted by Mr. G. W. Gege, of Messrs. Hughes & Hough, some high prices being reached.

Bidding was especially brisk for Louza which is looked upon as a very promising sub.

The opening offer, was $1,000 and the bids rose by $100 until $2,000 was reached when the pony was knocked down to Mr. Moxon. For Sinza bidding commenced at $300 and rose to $850, when the pony became the property, of Mr. Leefe.

THE PLUTOCRATS OF LABOUR,

BOATMAN'S EXTRAORDINARY

EARNINGS.

A Cardiff dock boatman bas boasted that one morning he earned vessels in the Cardiff docks. It is £20 before breakfast by shifting known generally that the dock pilots, licensed riggers and boatmen of the Bristol Channel ports have for some time past been earning unusually high money owing, not only to their enhanced charges and high war | bonuses, but also to the fact that oft times three" moves" are charged where only one was charged in pre- war times. Some of the bills pre- sented to shipowners have been colossal, and the remuneration of a "dock" pilot can now be said to be much higher than that of a deep sea pilot" who has been compelled to serve a strict apprenticeship and to secure his "ticket. These workers during the course of the day may work for a number of firms, and there. fore it is most difficult to assess their weekly earnings. It is understood that is not improbable that the income tax authorities will insist upon all shipowners, and brokers sending in the accounts they have paid, so that The Chinese restaurant keeper of individual assessment will be made.
