SCOTSWOOD'S FIRST LOCOMOTIVE

TRANSFORMATION OF AS GREAT WORKS,

Twelve months ago, that plat of the great engineering works of Sir W. G.Armstrong. Whitworth & Company, at Scotswood, on the fringe of Newcastle, was working at high pressure producing shells af every calibre from 18-pounders to navali projectiles weighing over a ton, says a recent issue of the Manchester Guardian. in these same works was completed the construction of the first locomotive engine ever turned out there.

Such a bald statement of fact cam convey but a very inadequate iden of all that is implied of the rapid trans- formation of a great works from a war to a peace footing. It has not been a case either of seeking ther line of least resistance and adapting munition works to the production of goeds for: which they were most nearly suited. It has in volved the radical reconstruction and reorganisation of the whole place in conformity with a policy conceived at the signing of the Armistice of making Scotswood a new centre of locomotive engine building. The Company we certainly entitled to count it a notable achievement that within twelve months of its concep. tion that policy has been translated into an accomplished fact.

Where twelve months ago stood nothing but long vistas of shell-tura- ing lathes there are now all the departments of a great enge-build- ing works, machine, boiler, tender and tank and erecting shops. Three thousand hands are employed here, and within a little while the works

tomers will come from abroad, because most British railways build their own engines. The works have been reconstructed on the most approved modern plan. One great gain

has been to ensure the systematic progression of work. Material enters. the shop at one end as forgings and castings, and passes in a steady flow throughout the length of the building, leaving it at the other end ready for erection. In this way economy both in time and labour is achieved.

The first engine constructed is of the main line superbeated, type, and has been built to the order of the North-Eastern Kailway Company, whose chief mechanical engineer (Sir Vincent. L. Raven) set it motion in the presence of many engineers and others

gathered to celebrate the occasion.

debtor-who is heir to a vast fortune but is temporarily unable to satisfy Lis creditors-chiefly moneylenders who demand from him 'a sum of £89,000.. "The disclosure of the debtor's name," said his 'counsel, would be fatal to these proceed ings," and he went on to say that the debtor by his father's will took a 46 per cent. share of a business at St, Helens, Lancs. There was a for- feiture clause in the will if his in- to any other person. He read an terests became vested in or changed

that his father, who died on October afidavit by the debtor which stated

23, 1916, entered into a contract for the purchase of certain property for £2,000,000, a deposit of £250,0003· being paid. The residuary estate of the father amounted to £3,000,000 of which the debtor would be entitled to half. The debtor's friends, to save him from being adjudicated a bankrupt, had come forward and agreed to pay his debts in full. They had paid debts amounting to £40,000 and it was hoped later to pay all the creditors in full.

The Attomey-General, opposing the application, said it was strongly felt by the official receiver that the publicity of advertisement was desirable for the purpose of ascertain- ing accurately what the debts were. There had been 133 petitions against the debtor,

Lord Justice Warrington said an adjournment for seven days would not do anybody any harm.

The details given, were so minute: that they left no possible doubt re- garding the debtor's identity, especi aly as many newspapers printed almost side by side with the report stories or pictures of Sir Thomas. Beecham of operatic fame.
