Just as commerce is the life and blood of a country, so education is. its soul. One without the other can- not exist in this present world of keen competition. Strange to say, however, this fact is--entirely over. looked and ignored.
The child of to-day is the man of to-morrow. To produce the right type of man, the desirable kind of citizen, we must mould the child, the developing organism, in the right and natural way. It is during child hood, when both the mind and body of the child are plastic, that its moral and physical foundations must be laid.
To achieve this object, we must obtain the requisite material, the right kind of individual fully qualified and capable of carrying on this most important and responsible work the ideal teacher. A manly, open-heart- ed teacher, will produce-other things being equal-frank and honest boys. The "personal equation" of the teacher, is a most important factor in education. His influence over his class cannot be over-estimat- ed. He is regarded by his boys as the fountain of honour, and the essence of manliness and scholarship. Let as assume, for the sake ” of argument, that all men are replaced by women teachers, and therefore the bays would, during the time of their schooling, come under the ea the influence of women. What type of boy would result? Obviously he would be effeminate, and lack that manliness which is expected of him. The place of a woman teacher is ir a girla' School, where she can give of her best to the young minds. Some of our most able teachers have been women; but womer, however
