LANDLORD MOBBED
NEW YORK WOMEN'S ANGER
AT HIGH RENTS.
New York, July 26.-New York is developing a short way with rent profiteers. The housing situation in the city has been growing steadily. worse for weeks, the landlords taking advantage of the shortage of houses (and apartments to force up renis. In hundreds of cases the tenants: have been turned out at short notice, on the expiry of leases. after ultimatums from the landlords, to quit or pay increased rents..
Flats commonly display carda bear- ing the words: "This house is on rent strike," meaning that the tenant. is one of those who have banded together to refuse to pay the in- creased rents and to meet with force- any bailiffs who come to evict them. Not long ago two landlords were chased through the streets and several have been manhandled by crowds of women.
A few weeks ago the mayor ap- pointed a committee to inquire into rent profiteering. At the sitting yesterday à landlord named Joachim and his son appeared to give evidence in their own defence against allega- tions brought by the tenants of fats of which they are the owners. The elder Joachim delivered a tirade against children and made personal references to one tenant. The latter, a large man, then rose and struck the landlord cn the left ear, knocking him over two chairs and a table into a corner of the room. This was the signal for a general attack. The audience, chierly women, advanced on the landlord and his son, crying, Kill them both," A wild scrim- mage raged in the committee-room.
Finally the police had to be called in to rescue the two Joachims, who by that time had been considerably
though to fill his cup of bitterness, mauled, and to restore order. As after the elder man had received first aid for his hurts and was leaving the building, he was served with a sub- pœna to reappear before the com- mittee on Monday, bringing his books- and accounts.
"INSULTING REASON."
BISHOP'S ATTACK ON PRO- HIBITION URUSADE.
"The prohibition crusade is unfort- unate, regrettable, and mistaken," declared the Bishop of Hereford, in a letter to The Time.
Mr. Gempers (he says) does but speak the truth' when he denounces prohibition as a social irritant, embit- tering the relations of classes, and driving the artisans into an attitude. of intractable resentment.
American prohibition has no good record. It is a discredited thing. The circumstances that it is now co extensive with North America does" not change its character, or promise it any better success. Its principle is unsound, and its method is tyrannous, In England drunkerness has been for many years past declining. When I became rector of St. Margaret's. Westminster, there were yet living. old people who could describe how they noted slumbering drunkards. lying on the pavement as they went to church on Sunday mornings.
moris. Education has done much;
Our generation has no such me-- decent housing will do more to make excess disgusting. Let us go forward on the path of social reform and cur success is certain..
་
Prohibition is a "throw back" to the discredited method of coercion. It violates elvic "self respect! Its- brutal simplicity insults reason and destroys liberty. It can but breed America arrogance, hypocrisy, and in England what it has bred in
discontent.
Christianity stands to lose by the success of the crusade for pro- hibition, for if the English artisan is forced to link together in his mind. the profession of Christianity' 'and. 'total abstinence he will reject both.
WHAT WILL MAKE ME FAT?
Loss of appetite is nature's first warning that something in the compli eated machinery of the system has gone wrong. And that something is invari- ably the blood. Good blood helps the digestive organs in their work by sup plying them with the strenrth they con stantly need. If the blood is impoverish ed and weak these organs fail to receive this assistance and the frat complaint they make is to cease to call for food Foor appetite never come alone. It is generally accompanied by indigestion, beadaches, back tanta in the mouth on rising from bed, coated tongue, lassitude and lack of some throughout the day. What you require to put matters. right is a course of Dr. William Pink Fills. The good new strengthening blood which these pilla creats Ands its. way at once to the debilitated and. ex bausted digestive organs, and the benefit they receive from it is soon noticed is 'the natural and permanent reture of the strayed appetite. Then the digesting becomes normal, headaches are brent,,
