MIDNIGHT RIOT.
POLICE TURN HOSE ON ANGRY CROWD.
Remarkable scenes were witnessed jat Wolverhampton late on Saturday night (May 81), when policement acting us firemen tumed the hose on a crowd of trom two to three thou sand people, who bombarded the police station with bricks and stones, Comanding the release of s charged soldier under ancet,
das- Shortly before 11 p.m. a constable arrested the discharged soldier, i man named Mountford, in Lichfield- street, the principal thoroughfare, on a charge of drunkenness. Five men who were with him refused to go away and abused the constable. Mountford got away, but with the aesistance of another policeman was recuptured.
A hostile crowd assembled and broken bottles were throw at the constables.. One was struck and kicked, and his jaw was broken.
With much difficulty Mountford was conveyed to the police station at the town hol. The crowd, among whom apparently were many friends of the prisoner, ranged themselves foutside and loudly demanded his release This the polico refused, and the mob became infuriated.
The chairman of a local batch of the Federation of Discharged Soldiers appealed to the crowd to dispersa, but was met with jeers and a brick, which necessitated his removal to hospital. Appeals from the chief constable and the superintendstii were equally in vain.
