WORLD'S LARGEST TANKER.
The steamer "San Florentino," the latest addition to the feet of the Eagle Oil Transport Co., Ltd; suce cessfully underwent her speed and other tests recently off the mouth of the Tyne, an average speed of 11.4 knots per hour being accomplished. The San Florentino" carries a dead. weight of 18,000 tons, and is the largest oil tank steamer in the world, she is 546 feet in length and 68 feet 7 inches in width. Fourand a half miles of ailpipes are fitted in the vessel, and the pipes are so arranged that four different grades of oil can be either loaded or discharged simultaneously without - becoming mixed. The after and forward pump Tooms are each fitted with two power- ful duplex pumps capable of discharg ing 300 tons of oil an hour. The main suction pipes are 10 inches, and the discharge pipes 8 inches; in diameter. Suctions are fitted close to the centre line of the ship to enable the tanks to be thoroughly drained. Each suction is controlled by sluice valves, operated from the shelter deck. For discharging the oil there are nine outlets on each side of the ship. The propelling engines consist of a set of compound geared turbines of the Brown-Curtis type, working a single propeller. The turbines work in series, but their connections are so arranged that they can each run independently, and be coupled to gearing to work turbines there is incorporated astern the propeller. In the casings of the turbines, capable of giving not less than 60 per cent. of the total, power for driving the ship ahead. Oil fuel burning apparatus is fitted to the boilers, which are cylindrical and five in number, with a working pressure of 200 lbs. per square inch.
THE LOGIC OF EG
"The distinguished Danish vegeta. rian Dr. M. Hindhede has made the interesting discovery that Germany. owes her downfall to the pit. In 1914 she had over 25 million pigs to feed. For the first five months of the war slaughtering was discouraged, at the cost of enormous reserves of foodstuffs. Early in 1915 this policy, was reversed, and by April the number of pigs, had been reduced by 35 per cent. Then a reaction in favour of pigs. set in; and their num bers were kept at about 70 per cent of the pre-war figure. Not till late in 1917 and early in 1918 was the fatality of this mistake. realised, and then it was too late Dr. Hindhede argues that Denmark avoided starvation by kill ing her pigs early, and that if Ger many had adopted the same course her collapse by starvation and Spartacism "would have been avoided. His theory conjures up the picture of a somnolent sow passively acting a part in history almost as dramatic as that played by.certain, cackling geese.
