CANTON TRADE IN

HARDWARE IN 1918,

[Consul Albert W, Pontius, Canton, China, Feb. 21, 1919.]

war.

The hardware business as a whole did well last year as a result of the shortage of imports caused by the Generally speaking, dealers were holding out for higher prices on some of their goods because of the limited stock on hand and the difficulty and delay in getting ship- ments from the United States and Europe.

High-grade pocket knives, files of different sizes, iron and brass screws, padlocks,, drawer pulls, planes, spoke shaves, and in fact all classes of hardware found an excellent market in Canton.

Prior to the war considerable quantities of enamelware such as wash-basins, pots, plates, and dishes, spoons, bowls, soap dishes, etc., were imported from Germany, Austria, and England. These were entirely re- placed by Japanese goods of inferior quality which appeared to be special- ly manufactured for this market; and on account of their cheapness a large demand was created. This likewise applied to cash, boxes, which were sold in large quantities at prices rang ing from $0.80 to $3.50 Mexican ($0.64 to $2.80 United States cur rency.)

As a result of the great advantage the erection of modern buildings and consequent increased rentals. derived therefrom, many large old- style buildings in Canton were sold and demolished during recent years and new semi-foreign dwellings of two to four storeys erected, in con sequence of which there was an excellent deraand for builder's hard- ware. Building contractors and owners, realizing the rapidly advanc- ing ideas of the Cantonese in improv ing the sanitary condition and ventila- tion of residences, invariably planned a greater number of windows and dooss than heretofore.
