Spot stands nominally at Y45 and futures at Y43 in Osaka, but so far as actual sales go there is little doing except cash purchases at Y41 or Y42.-

CHILEAN NITRE.
During the war 60,000 tons of Chilean nitre 'was imported into Siberis, 20,000 tons of which was forward to European Russia, the rest accumulating at Vladivostok and Irkutsk. With the termination of war the Russian authorities have been contemplating the disposal of these accumulations and recently some was put in charge of the Irkutsk Government and the rest under the combined management of the Allies, | ****a********** for dienosal. The Siberian Govern ment offered some time ago to sell off the whole stock, on, account ot financial difficulties, to Japan, and it is reported by the Osaka Mairichi thar contract for more than 2.000 tone has already been made at Y180 to Y210 per ton, which is expected to arrive in Japan early in Manch.
To revert to steel, though Japan prices have slumped so heavily, London prices are equivalent to Y150 for steel plates. As the present Osaka quotation is Y296 for inch to inch plates and Y459 for special qualities, considerable further de- clines are anticipated.
As the remaining 38,000, tons. offers are not brisk, as the demand has considerably decreed since the armistice was concluded and, the quality of the stocks is somewhat ncertain. There is a rather ambi Suous report in the Mainichi, how ever, of an expected consignment of the nitre from Chile not arriving to the requisition of the T.K.K. liner by the Government. This will create some demand, aud the Osaka mer. chantsare seeking for the opportunity of purchasing, Russian nitre at the comparatively low price of Y135 per the present ton. compared with
Osaka market price of Y230 per 20. particular. ton. but are in
hurry, for if, after all, the previous orders, amounting to some 26,000 tons, do arrive from Chile, there will he slumo.
