tured the Shanghai Derby.

Mr. Hill did not have such a sue- cessful day yesterday, securing only ene first place but is that was the Derby he is no doubt satisfied. He was quite elated over his win, his first Derby, throwing up his hand in joy as he passed the winning post.

In all respects yesterday was EL unqualifielas cess. Everything w well arringed, the procealings went along without a bitch, and everyone seated on good terms with every- body elses

Money seemed very plentiful... AL though he people were in the en el ure, receipts in the Cast Streeps and Pari Mutuel were very little less than in previous years.

Favourites had a good day and most people seemed to have money to draw. Very poor returns were the order in the place betting. Seldom was there a good return to be bad in that department. As the day proces-led the drywings for the Cash Sweeps increased. The fist race js always sind, yesterday the holder of No. 221 tjekės had $935 to draw, the lucky holder of ticket No. 621 fa e Derby had the nice little rest egg of 85,089 to come. He was very anxious that Mr. Lowe should keep it, but we suppose only temporarily. Excepting the Derby the Sist prize in the Cash Sweeps gradually rose from $935 in the first race to $2178

in the last.

To-day the course Allad much sooner than on previous days. By the first saddling bell, at 11.30, there was a large muster including a good number of the fair sex. The weather was again fine.

The ubiquitone photographer Mee Cueung wis early about, Combining business with pleasure. He took n photo of the Stewards during the tiffin interval.

The Band-of-the 19th Infantry had again a nice selection of music end added a 'gd, deu! to the pleasure of those attending the meeting.
