WHY THE ROUBLE 19· RISING.
During the past few weeks there has been a considerable increase in the price of the Rouble throughout the Far East, an average price being about Mex. 0.20 per Roxble. This price, it is to be under. stood, is for paper currency and has nothing to do with exchange rates on Russia, which are practically non existent. The explanation for the pre sent rise, which from all appearances is * permanent, seems to be that there is a Istrong "Japanese demand for Roubles. Whether or not there will be a military invasion by the Japanese into Sibe it is quite certain that there w be a strong commercial invasion, and the Japans agents who will scour the estern Siberia for beant, wheat and rendy cash in their hands. In the pre sent unsettled state of the country it would be useless to attempt any sort of banking arrangements. To the Russian peresat, regardless of
political upbear als and the falling of dynasties, the Kassian rouble of the old réxime is the -only money be is acquainted with or has any conádence in, and in this res pect the Russian peasant is no different in his conservatism from peasanta or working men the world ofr. Japanese /brokers are therefore taking time by: the forelock and gradually accumulating Apply of ready, cash f

The Germans continue fighting desperately for possession of the main Amiens road. There was some fighting yesterday of a very fierce character. The enemy massed early in the morning wept of Dermacourt. We blew up the neghbouring Somme bridga. A most heary attack followed, in which the New Zealanders eventually repulsed the enemy after a ding dong battle.
