"THE GREATEST BATTLE OF THE WAR."
THE FIGHT FOR WARSAW.
LONDON, July 20, 1.20 p.m. A Petrograd message states that the greatest battle of the war is that for Warsaw, which is raging in full fury, the line swaying hither and thither, The enemy in this first phase are gaining more ground bat are suffering enormous losses. The Russians are burling the Germans back at favourable points. Two vital sectors are the district in front of the great fortroos line Navageorgieoak to Ostrolepka along the Narew and the key of the position near Krasnostaw to the south of Lublin Chalm and near the railway.
"
The communique says the Gormant have re-asapmed the offensive and have captured Polery, a village on the Narew front, bas other attacks further southward were successfully repulsed. The Russians then fought obstinately in the rearguard towards Ostroleaks, afterwards delivering a brilliant counter
attack.
The Sighting southward of the Lubia-Cbolm railway was desperately violent. The Raisinns successfully repulsed General Mackensen for a whole day bat at dawn the Germans captured Kravnostaw and the forde thore. In the cocme of the day, however, the Russians repulsed some extremely determined attacks near Krasaostaw. The Austrians, after being held up on the river Wolica, established themselves in a village on the right bank to the south-aitward of Krasnostaw, whereupon the Russians, withdrew their second line to positions further eastwards. The Russians defeated four furious attacks delivered on a wide front supported by masses of artillery, and also drove Austro-German. forces from their trenches. The Russians maintained all their positions on the Dniester,
