REVIEW.

Frinn Canton to Pi Che Tschiti (Yunnan),

by P. R. F. CARTER,

In the autumn of 1900 two residents of

Canton derided to make a journey through

the provinces of Kwantung, Kwang-si, Tonking and Yunum, principally in order

to see for themselves the wonderful en- gineering fonts accomplished by the French in Tunkio. The story of their advantures, told by Mr P. it. F. Carter, makes capital reading and should stimulate others to push aside from the beaten truck and see the interior of thins at first hand. Of course the travelling was very roughin pinces and only indomitable plack pulled them through. but once the frontier was insed and the railway was reached, the journey was very enjoyable. Mr Carter is enthusiatic over the somery through, which he passed and has nothing but generous raise for the engineering triumphs of the French in trying their railway through the Red-River Valley. despite the terrible toll of! deaths which was incurred. A gond word is also said for the Chinese Attendants, borly servants and excount who accompanied the two travellers on their arduous journey.
