RUBBER NOTES.

THE CHINA MAIL.

As the fifth ordinary gonoral meeting of the Kuala Selangor Rubber Company, hold last month in London, the chairman.. Mr William A. Horn, made the following remarks regarding the future of jubber: He said, "Now, ns to the future of rubber, those of us who have studied the question and who wore induced so go into the planting of rubbar kars induced to do's by getting all the statistice of the rubber that was planted in the world and also the statistics of the wild rubber that was pro- duced, Wild rubber, of course, costs great deal more to produce than plantation rubber, and when you have produced it, it is of inferior quality. A great deal

of it costs sa lb. and over to collect, and when it is collected it is not worth within 1s. er s. of plantation rubber. Therefore, it is an obvious doduction that whenever rubber falls to Sa, ib,the balk of the wild rubber--the indigenous rubber -will be worded out. When you come to the bronking polat of Sa. alb. the greater portion of the indigenous rubber cannot be produced at a profit, so that the plantation man can sit down with the comfortable conviction that his produce for very many years to come cannot fall below 3. a Ih whatever happens, and that when it does fall to that, or anywhere near it. the demand will be enormously increased. Tak ing a proporty like ours, with rabber at 38 a th-given that. nothing unforeseen hap- pons-it will still yield very largo díriden1s. to the sharch idem on the capital of this ebupany."

He also had semuathing interesting to | pay regarding bogus companies. His ndvict, which we reprint belör, might with profit _be__road,__marked, tearat "änd_inwardly digested by local speculnters in rubbet.

"How the public can go into certain kinds of investments is really a puzzle to me, I do not think they really read rubber prospectuses. They look at the capital, and they look at the arep But there

sro numbers of rubber

for propositions that I know,

an absoluto fact, have been foisted on the public that are hardly worth the paper they are written on. It is a very easy thing to go and pick up a block of land, and put in any number of hundred acres of rubber, but when you have put it in re bave a great deal more to do afterwards,

THE DANGERS OF THE AMAZON.

Relating his experiences during ex- plorations in Bolivia to the Royal Geo- graphical Society recently, Major P. H. Fawcett remarked that voyages up the Amazonian tirers were not without their dangers.

There are anacondas (ginnt anaken) crcco. miles alectric cels, sting mys, and the perabia, a small deep bodied fish with razor-like teeth and an unappeasable.sp- petite for blood. Men unfortunate enough`| to fall into the Paraguay-where the perania is most prolific may be picked clean before they can be rescued. The anaconda is ubiquitous, moras by night, and has a weird cry..
