DINKES IN ROKOSE OF DISTINGUIKHED

TVEITOR.

4 short time before the alose of the Ohma New Year &'company of Chinese gentlemen, a member of the Chinese E.M.0.A., met in a private dining room of the King Edward Hotel to meet Prof. Da Witt Burton, of Chicago University. The tables were beautifully decorated and covers were laid for forty guests. After the immediate physical needs had been abundantly supplied the honoured President Mr B. Wong Tape in a meat happy manner acted se toast-miator and called upon Me 3. M. Wong to respond to the toast. "The Futurs of the Y.M.C.A." The reponse was given in an admirablə manner. As a special compliment to the guest of honour the fosats were ali given, in English. After this carefully thought out response, Dr Wan Tum Mo was asked to toast Our Guest" who said that it was most fitting that a company of mom- ber of the Y.M.C.A. ahould gather in honour of "Our Guest" as he was the author of a book used by more than 100,000 students who are members of the Association in many different countries of the world. He characterized Prof. Burton as not being a 'globe-trotter' and sea man, the secret of whose mission to the Orient was best known to himself. (It is needless to say that the toaste more all drank with right good cheer in the best coated water). Prof. Burton inresponetothis guva most interest ing account of circumstances which brought him to the East. During his remarks be showed how a grest University had re- sponsibility for the enlightenment of not only the people within the walls of its own MATE

buildings but for all the people of the FOR CATALOGUE | country in which it is located and reaching #45

even to a wider sphere for the people of all the world. Prof. Burton said that after leaving Singapore he had refused all invita tions to do say public speaking; however those who were privileged to be present on this occasion heartily congratulated themselves that they had this opportunity of hearing so eminent a lecturer.

Hongkong, May 19, 1908,

Following this interesting discourse the Chairman called upon another honoured guest, Mr A, P. Wilder, the American Consul-General. In a manner of which no other is capable Mr Wilder responded. His brief address was very heartily enjoyed. To be able to mix humour and good sense is indeed an accomplishment of which to be proud. All who heard Mr Wilder on this occasion were won to his friendship and were assured of his gengine interest in the advancement of China to her rightful place among the nations of the world.

Aitor bidding Prof. Barton goodnight and a safe journey through China the members departed to their homes.

Prof. Barton is on his way to Shangbai, stopping at the various porta. Later, he will go to west Ohira.
