At last report the mandarin, who has on received from the MILITARY had been sent to survey the huchour had AUTHORITIES that GUN PRACTICE. pronounced it to be ton small for the mur-will be carried out as under;- pose. The Government will however be very shortsighted if they do not retnin possession of this larimur, and improve it sa the develpment of Hainan progresyce.

The harbour was very carefully surveyel And charted under the direction of French There has booz naval offices in 1858. Little change in the character of the authern age since then, The entrance is compara tirely straight and Barrows down on the width of about a quarter of a mile, sad at the narrowest place there is a depth of

wator of about ten metres.

The outer

barbuûr is a very good ansherage during the severe wins of the winter, and as the entranco is from the south the inner harbour ia easily entered during the bummer when the wouch winds prevail, and allorda & quiet anchorage during the rough weather of that

BenA011

It is surrounded on nearly all sides by high hills and on one side there is quite an extensive plain of coral gravol formation, which would give a good site for docks and wardhouses. The entranc ia as ly protected from the attacks of a bostile Hert if forts are erected on the ende of the promontories near the entrance of the outer barbour.

This hy is a sub-station of the Chinces Imporial Customs. Here for over ten years a foreign Customs dficer has been loved on a junk anchored in the harbour and it is his duty to examine a junks com-

ing to Yu-lia Bay. All native vessels with ports for the Custom district in which run is located, on their Arrival in the island from south of Bir are required to report as Yu-lin Bay before landing their cynos elsewhere.

These juuks tually arrive during the summer months, and then for a time this hay is a lively place with at times fifty" or more junks in the meliorag These junke sometimes remain in the Hay for two weeks or more, till the arrival of a war junk to protect them while wailing up the Haian coast, where they fear the attwks

of piratus.

When the Karstorps officer was first placed in Yu-li Bay, there were a thin two hundred juuks which annually visited here: bat under the competition of continued steamer traffic, the union has decreased, and there are i wl than one hundred that have visited the place this year, and they are combining that they have poor profits in the tmdu in which they aro engaged. which in principally in bringing task wood to the northern part of Hainan. They tako south as a return sarge, iton frying pans, and Chinese crockery, nad similar Chinese products.

There is a story that the East India merchantmen were in the halát of auchor- ing in Yu-fin Harbor during a portion of ach year to await Entourable monsoon breeze. and that there is a cemetery near the Bay in which are buried Englishmen, who died during the healthy seasons which they sometimes encountores here. Nu tances of such a cemetery are now to be fend, nor do the catives of the locality know where it was. There are however two bari! places of French sailors who perished near the Bay either in wrecks or during epidemies; and the sites have been cared for and worked with crosses bencing iuscriptions.

In the vicinity of the Bay are found the Aborigines of the island, the Iris, and they here use their native dress. They are generally very peaceable, and are very willing to act as guides for anyone who wishes to go into the interior to shoot the wild boats or deer, or for game birds which are found in great number.

The country around the Bay is hilly mul consequently beautiful. It is not thickly

settled, and contains much undeveloped

laud. The hills are said to contain minerale which have been prospected to but limit
