GUNFIRE BLASTS.
Ever since the introduction of the cordiko charge, the last from the heavier part
of our battleships' armaments, has been ♫ squeso of anxiety and of continual ex. periment on the part of naval guanory specialists. The first thing to be affected was, the cars of the officers and men ; for ranny of them vory obstinately refused to be so effeminate as to protect the drums of their ears by the simple expedient of vaing
cotton wool plug. It is an unfortunat fast that the bearing of many of our senior naval ulicers of today is not what it wight have been had they guarded it mora jealously when they were young gunnery expects, setting what they believed to he propar example to their mun. To-day wo racugnise how mistaken this action was, and car plugs have become the rule throughout the Fleet when target practice is heing carried out. But the fittings of the ship as well as the ears of the men have been subjected to destructive blasts, in the
wake of the travel of the nuveda of our heaviest guns. This destruction reached its maximum in the battleship-cruiser Indomitable when boats at the ship's davits wear the turrets were rendered useless for further service, and older fittings were torn up by the powerful blasts. Happily the recent trials- of her gister-ship the Inflexible, have provet less expensive in this direction, owing to the precautions that lave been adopted; and the boats were found quite sound at the conclusion of the gunnery trials.- United ceruice Gazette.
