PUBLIC WORKS.

New Slaughter House.

A meeting of the Public Works Com- mittoo was held on the 8th August.

The Hon. the Director of Public Works (Mr William Chatham, O.M.G.) was Chair- man, and there were also present--the Hon. Mr Edward Osborne and the Hon. Mr Henry Keswick.

The Chairman submitted blook plans and explained that the removal of the existing slaughter house and estilà depôt adjoin- ing Dos Four Road, Hanghom Bay, was necessitated by the construction of the railway and it was proposed to construct now buildings to rophco them on a site noar Mia Tau Kok, where the drainage, which Was of a somewhat offensive nature, could be discharged into water of considerable depth. At the same time, it was proposed to make the new slaughter house more than twice the size of the present one and to add separate gheds for the socommodation of 400 swine and 200 sheep or goats, for which no special provision existed in the present depôt. The shed for eattle would necenimodato 120 head, being of the same dimensione ne - the existing cattle shed, which was however utilized to a considerable extent for the housing of swing, de. It would be quits possible to defer the construction of either the swing shed or the sheep shed until some future time as it was intended to appropriate a large aros of land which would enable future extensions to be carried out.

The estimated cost of providing the so- commodation stated above, including com- pensation to some squatters who would be dislodged, the propaation of the sito and ita enclosure by walls and fences, an isola tion shed, the necessary offices, and repairs to an existing house to render it suitable for an inspector's quarters, was 875,000.

The Committee unanimously agreed to; recommend that the whole of tho works included in the above estimate be proceed- od with at once and that access to the nuw be provided by a road from the

Road Kowloon

City submitted a proposal for The Chairman adding another storey to the existing school building at the junotion of Pokfulam Rand and High Street, to provide additional accommodation for pupile, which the Inspector of Schools bad represented whe surgently required. The estimated cost of the work was 87,100.

The Committee unanimously approved of the plant.
