THE STRAITS POST OFFICE. The aumul report of the Postal Depar ment of the Simits Settlements for the your 1800 contains some interesting infor mation With regard to correspondence it is stated that during the year, especially during the stay in Singapore of the various Beets, very large numbers of pictorial post- cards were recuised and despatched. The weight of the mail handled was about 684 tons, an increase of about 124 por cont on the previous year. In addition to this, 34,788 foreign maila wore bandied by the department. No mail for, or from, the Co- lony was lost during the year. Registered Bit ales of $410,201 in value were dealt with, na increase of $14,213, or equivalent to 12 per cant on previous figures. One regie- tored letter was lost by a postman in Sings- Pore; one advinod as sent from London to Penang could not be traced there; one from Germany to Penang was reported na missing on arrival, and one letter was stolen in Negri Sembilan. 2,713 articles, insured for 8418,430, were received and despatched, as compared with 2,299, for 6317.786

The entire staff then consisted of fourteen in Singapore, five in Penone and one in Singapore was the only Sat thero tlement with postmen. and here Here only four. The Singapore staff is now 140 strong, Perang his 88 on the list, and Malaces 17, making a total of 250, None of the the existing staff now remain is haruces.
