We have to acknowledge receipt of the Japan Directory for 1885, and it is with satisfaction that we notice this guide to Japan has again been materially improved without being inch increased in bulk Among the new features are an excellent coloured map of Japan, a list of the recently rohabilitated Japanese nobility, and two articles on Japan, reprinted from the nylopedia Britannica by permission of Dosera A. and C. Black, of Edinburgh. Those articles were written by Me T. R, H. MeClatchie, of H.B.M. Consular Servico, and Sir Rutherford Aloh, fommerly H. B. 31. Minister to Japan and subsequently to China. Though comparatively brief they are among the most valuable and comprehensive contributious ca Japan, and contain ac curate descriptions of the country and its vesources, the inhabitants and their man- hers and language, and also gives their his tory. They greatly enhance the value of the Directory, whose publishers may well foal desply grateful to the Mesara Black for their parnission to make use of them. Pho criminal and civil proceduro codes which formerly occupied a considerable portion of the Directory have this year boen loft cut The Directory is again well printed, and the lists of officials and residents seem to be both complete and carefully compiled.
