His death at Macao io the following year, before he had well on- tered on his manhood, was justly re- garded as a national loss. It was cer fainly an irreparable loss to Anglo Chinese literature, for born and educated? as he had been in Chinn, his knowledge. of Chinese, both oral and verbal, far sur. passed that of any student, either then or for many years after. Of other writers who at one time or other contributed to the depontory we may mention the names of Milne, G. T. Los, Gutzlaff, Thom, Melhurst and latterly Wade and TT. Mendows.
The knowledge which he had acquired as editor and contributor to the Espen Cory eminently fitted Dr Williams for bis first great work The Middly Kingdomis This work bas so recoztly been reviewed. in this and other journals on the occasion. of the issue of a second edition, that it is needless here to do more than remark that it has beon and still is by far the most comprehensive and authoritative book we have on China. The result has not come up to this expectation. The truth probably is that the revision should bove been committed to younger hands. Dr. Williams bad let the republication lie ever so long that failing health bad de- prived him of the energy necessary to the re-writing and revising of the whole work. We do not wonder at it, for the labour of working in all the latest in- formation, often to be gathered only from 4.34 ephemeral publications, would be very great, and it is no reproach to De Wil- liams to say that in the last year of his life he failed to do all that might have. bren done.
