A SUMOUR seems to bave been pretty widely troulated in the Colony during the last for days to the effect that the body of a child bad been found near the Tank, mupposed to have suffered violent death, from the sccompanying appearances. The most ghastly details were given as to the outrage to which the body had been subjacted; but fortunately the barrowing tale which way spread about collapse on being enquired lato. It is trus that the body of an infant- w really found by a constable on the hill side in the neighbourhood mentioned; it was taken to the Government Civil Hos phial; and examination made thers showed that the remains were those of a still-barn child. It is well known that the Chiness. custom with sall-born infante is to deposit the bodies in any unfrequented spot, with a few jes papers attached, as they are not oonaldared to be worthy of the rights of or- dinary burlad,
