HONGKONG, SATURDAY, MAR 13, 1880,

A Good deal has lately been said and written about the line of demarcation beyond which a newspaper editor must not pass in his commenta upon public events or proceedings in the Courts, Any one conducting an independent journal must feel the necessity of taking full advantage of the privilege which hedges public criticism in these days, ne far as his sense of duty and honour will permit. This principle has been, is, and will be the rule of the conductors of this paper and anything which seems to curtail the privilege possesses therefore en unusual interest. The remarks made at a recent Coroner's Inquest, held by Mr C. V. Creagh, in reference to the terrible tragedy enacted in a nativa house in Square Street, furnish an apt illustration of the mistaken" notions which many officials seem to entertain regarding the rights of jour nalists. Me Creagh, the Corner, is re ported to have said that he regretted that comments on the evidence had ep peared in one of the daily papers. Be considered it was indiscreet to have com was sub juice, and the writer of that mented on the case while the matter.

article, had laid himself open to a cris minal prosecution. He hoped the minds of the Jury had not been influenced by that." The ghastly facts that came to light will still be fresh in the minds of our readers, and because a certain mys- teriousness hung around the tragedy, all who take an interest in public occurrences were puzzled how to account for the cause of, and the actors in, the sad business. In the interests of Justice, and by way of pointing out to the Police Authorities a treh view of the possibis lities, the following paragraphwas written and published in these columns

There are very strong reasons for be lieving that the tingedy enacted the other night la Square Street is not murder

And we understand that this is the comment referred to by the worthy Coroner. It was penned, as may be at daca seen, with the object of furthering not of interfering with Justice. Theres was no prisoner in custody in the case and there appeared to be literally to evidence before grybody to show that anything had to be charged against any one. Where the foundation of a crim inal prosecution against the writer of the barmless little article above quoted was to come from, became naturally as
