As the new of the wreck in telegraphle the details are meagre enough; but it appears that the ill-fated vessel left Amoy on her voyage to Taiwanfoo, and she was wrecked on the Northwest end of the Pescadores on the 14th Inatant. Fortunately all Kven have been saved, and the treasure (a pretty heavy Item, we hear) was also resoued. It is not known whether sha had any large amount of other cargo, although it is said she had à quantity of opium on board, and it is believed that a steamer will be at once sent from Amoy to save what may be remaining. The news, reached Amoy by a junk, which had on board the survivora and treasure, do, which had been saived. It is stated that the vessel is a total loss, which we understand falls chiefly upon the local offices. The Taitaan was a craft which seafaring persons call an unlucky ship: she was sunk in this Harbour in the great typhoon of 1874, and after being
rained had her name Leonor altered to that of Taiwan. It is supposed that Capt. Abbott must have boon deceived by the currents and drawn in amongst the rocks during the

It anything in calculated to try the genuine qualities of a horse we should imagine it was a victory achieved in a long race like this one, over a hard and dusty course with Bol's rays pouring down, not quite so fiercely as we sometimes get them here, but still quite warmly enough to make a race over two and quarter miles a rather ancomfortable undertaking. The victory is perhaps more noteworthy from the fact that it was the first race at the Meating in which a horse that had taken the lead at the start, and had held it for the greater part of the time, had succeeded in alti mately tacuring. the first place. Strathavon's victory in the race for the Champion Stakes was rather a surprise, Reichsfreiherr of course being the fast favourite for the struggle.

LOCAL AND GENERAL.
We are informed by the Agents (Mesara, Adamson, Bell & Ob.,) that the S. 8. Teviot, from London, left, Singapore yester day (18th) for Hongkong,
We are requested by the Clerk of the Course to state that there will be four or five races to-morrow; commencing at 5 p.m.
Tus Government Gäu'ts of Wednesday, the 19th inst., contains the offer of a reward of $25 for the arrest or for information leading to the arrent of a notorious offender named Wong Aklu, a gentleman of the burglar elast, who distinguished himself by com- mitting a burglary at Wong-nal sheong on

Canton.
Feb. 16, 1879, Confirming the general tenor of our re- port of last evening respecting the tumult directed against a member of the Houqua family, whoso residense is in the 18th ward, (the portion of the Western suburbs known as shap-pat-p'ou in the vernacular, or as Curio Street by foreigners), wo are very gind to correat it upon the point of the individual by whose instrumentality that revered name has been compromised; respecting which, indeed, our own correct impression was yesterday erroneously overruled by a com- pradors who had just come from the scene of strife, fully informed as he assumed as to the person directly implicated in the alleged grievances, whilst the antiquity of the two dwellings and the density of the mob left no blue to the point. Happily, the regrote inspired by recollection of the high-minded course of the historical chief of that name, in contrast with the position of his presently inculpated successor, are qualified in that this person is not the amiablo gentleman his seventh and only surviving son, but a nephew of his who is a son of the second son of the former Chief of the Co-Hong of Security Merchants. Wa.walked through the street from East to West this P.M. and found the neighborhood of the residences of the several Houqua families there guarded by well- armed detachments of soldiers, who per- mitted the general traffic in the absence of any local signs of a recurrence of tumult. Unhappily, the police or soldiers yesterday were brutally indiscriminating in repression and more or less severely injured four or five persons who were mere spectators, in- eluding two lads under 13-years of ago.
This morning the fire-wood dealers declared their purpose to cease bringing any more of it from the country; but subsequently the threatened "strike" was averted, for the time being at least.
In the midst of all the complications of the time; the rebellions in Kwang-si and Hainan, the revival of parsecution of the native Christians in the Eastern districts, and the spread of the Opium plague; there is- per contra-a reassuring feature of moral healthfulness, in that orders have arrived from Peking for the establishment here of two new schools, one for teaching in the German language and one in the French language.
Alarms of fire have been frequent latter- ly; but there has been no considerable con- fsgration.
