We were told in a telegram, dated tho 4th instant, that "the Leader of the Opposition had decided not to move an amendment to the Address, but to introduce a motion censuring the policy of the Government, though not refuning supplies." There was unquestionably a strong feeling between the two political parties on the Afghan question, arising apparently through an effort on the part of the Conservatives to ascribe the wai to the results of blunders committed by the Liberals, when they held the reins of power. Several telegrams of late have referred to this matter, notably one on the 26th November, stating: "The Liberal party leaders have held a meet- ing to declare that portion of the Sacro- tary of State for India's despath, which endeavours to fasten the responsibility FRIDAY, January 10-

BIRTHS.

At Wachang, on the 5th December, the Wife of the Rev. J. R. Raus, Wesleyan Mission, of a Son.

At Swatow, on the 16th Lust, the Wife of ALFRED BUEER, Esq., Commissioner of Customs, of a Daughter.

If it be true that the Afghan policy of the Government has been condemned by a majority of 100 votes, the Government must either resign, in favour of Liberal ministers, or Parliament must be dis solved and a general election be held.. Should Lord Beaconsfield be of opinion that the Liberal majority does not re present the feeling of the country, hes will probably advise Her Majesty to dissolve Parliament; on the other hand, if he believes that a general alection would simply strengthen the hands of

the Liberals, he will most likely prefer to resign, and allow a Liberal Government to come into power. A change of Government would unquestionably be rather unfortunate at the present moment considering the half completed work in Turkey and in Afghanistan. The debate, which we are told lasted four days, and which appears to have resulted so disastrously for the Conservatives, must have had more reference to des patches and acts in regard to Afghanistan of which we here in the Far Bast know. little or nothing than to the despatch of the Mission and the sending of su expedition · into the country Surely no Govern ment, Conservative or Liberal, could quietly submit to be treated as this potty ruler has ventured to treat England 19 would obviously have been an idiotic. policy to quietly swallow the insults of the Ameer, and permit his very friendly relations with Russia to go on without some effort to convince himi that a neutral. feeling on his part towards England was an indispensable condition to his ruling the country containing the high-roads from Central Asia into India.
