Mr Brown says of native opium that- the consumption in the province in 1863 was estimated to be about 250 piculs per
annum in ten years the consumption was considered to have been more than doub led, and during the Chinese year ending February 1878, the consumption is el- timated to have reached 1,800 piculs, "The native article" adds Mr Brown, is said to be improving in quality from teaching the producer better methods of cultivation, and the boiler is gradually becoming more successful in his endea youra to remove or mask the peculiar favour which fails to please the palate accustomed to the Indian drug."
