THE subjoined paragraph is (says the Japan Gazette) of considerable interest. The City of Peking, which sailed on the 1st instant, carried 184 bales of silk nominally for New York, the shippore preserving the option' of forwarding through to Europe. The Impossiblity of separating that and future shipments is apparent, consequently any division of the export returns must neces sarily be inaccurate, a cironmatance which should not be lost sight of when-statiation of trade are referred to.

Which is the "extensive glik house as Yokohama, which, it is said, controla the silk trade of both Ohios and Japan ? If the agents of the Messageries Maritimes and F. & 0. §. 8. Co. can secertafu, it. will be to their interests to make early arrangements to prevent the loss of a trade which they have hitherto conducted no well. The active competition of the Amer. ican steam lines is no doubt responsible in some measure for the report.

The concluding lines of the paragraph point to a conclusion which must depend very much upon the judgment and opinions of the large importing houses of France and England

THE RAW SILE TRADE OF CHINA AND Jaras. It is reported that an extensive ailk house at Yokokame, which, it is said, controls the silk trade of both China and Japan, is making an endeavour to obtain quicker means of transit to London for the valuable wares they forward. In order to accomplish this, it is designed to ship in the first instance to San Francisco, thance overland to New York. Should this scheme be carried out, our American competitor will endeavour to get the choice of stocks in transit, which, if accomplished, will give them a rare chance of declaring that European silks are fabricated out o materials which they have rejected.
