LANCENY

Yeong Alai, a coolie, was charged with stealing a piece of wood from Messrs Meyer & Co.'s godowns at Wanchai.--Mr Julius Scier said, he watched the defend ant from a ship which was lying alongside of the wharf, and by the aid of a telescope, distinctly saw him loiter about the godown until some men who were near him had left the godown. He then tucked his troneers and shouldering the piece of wood walked off with it, and was arrested by the foreman of the godowns.-Defendant ad- mitted having been one month in Gaol for unlawful possession and pleaded poverty as an excuse for his present offence. He was Bent to three months' imprisonment, the last two weeks of which were to be in solitary confinement.

A MODEL-FULIORMAN.

Sikh Constable No. 571, was fined $5 for defiling the stream which supplies the tank at the Albany by washing his person therein. A gun lascar remonstrated with him, and the defendant then set upon him and best him. Mr Creagh ordered that the lascar receive 82 of the fine as compensation.
