In cases where enterprises of this char- seter have received the sanction of the Government, it has been usual to pass a special Act, or grant a special charter, allowing them to exercies such sovereign rights; generally for a limited period.

PLANTS.
CANTON
The following list of a few Canton plants, including such vegetables and Rowers as are daily made use of by the natives, and euch exetic ones as have become domesticated. or received regular paincs, is now published in the hope that it may form a nucleus for the ultimate identification of many plants, flowers and vegetables which are known in many oases by different names in other parts of China. There are only fifty sites in the present first instalment; but from time to time similar lists will be published with the same object in view. No printed anthority has been in any case accepted for the application of any one Cantonese name to any single botanical name. The plan pursued has been as follows. The plant itself has in each case been produced before a competent botanical authority, it has then been shown to at least three natives, entirely unconnected with and widely separated from each other. Ne plant has been inserted in this list anleys at least three such natives agreed without hesitation in applying to it the name adopted. The sounds, having been thus seanrad, have been in each case submitted to a Chinese literate, and, where possible, compared alee with the charactors used by European lexicographers. It will be noticed that vulgar and unauthorised okarasters have occasionally to be used. In other cases a name is locally applied which strictly belongs to another plant. In some few cases the colloquial sound has to be imitated as best it can.~~Duggestions and corrections will receive the Editor's carerul attention.
