GARRISON THEATRE. The Amateurs of the Band of the 74th Highlanders gave a very pleasant evening's entertainment at the Garrison Theatre last
evening to a crowded house. The perform ence commenced with a melodrama in twe acts, entitled "Robert Macaire." The plot is doubtless well known." Robert Macaire (J. Paddon) a thief and murderer, escapes from gaol along with another scoundrel of the same propensities only with much weaker nerves named Jacques Strap (H. Jamieson), They arrive at an inn kept by one Dumont (W. Larman), whose adopted sou Charles 3. Mackinnon) is about to be married to Clementino (B. Hayton) the daughter of a wealthy farmer named Germeuit (J. E. Walker). A poor woman appears on the scene during the marriage festivities who excites the compassion of the farmer, and she is induced to remain at the inn during the night. The former is murdered and robbed by Macaire and his companion, the robbers remaining at the inn confident, at least one of them was, of being above sus picion. The poor woman is accused of the murder, a purse, which the farmer had himself given her, being found in her pos session and considered conclusive evidence of
bor guilt. Macaire discovere that she is his wife and that Charles is their son. The Boone in which the Gendarmes demand the passports of the two companions was most amusing. The Gondarmes were Jacques particular antipathy; the very word made hima tremble. The parts of Macaire, and his companion, ware exceedingly well sus- tained throughout, the searance of the former and the quaint humor of the latter calling forth roars of laughter. The closing tableaue was really a piece of excellent acting. Macaire endeavours to escape from Justice, is shot by the Gendarmes, brought back and dies in the arms of his neglected wife and son, asking their forgiveness. The piece as a whole was well sustained. After
