At half-part 4 on the morning of 18th March, fire was discovered in one of the >houses in the street of Trozo, and it soon communicated to others, and in spite of the prompt assistance given by the autho- rities and others, some 20 houses of light construction were destroyed before the fire could be got under. It is said that near the group of houses destroyed there were stored aume 3000 cases kerosine oll, and it would have been very disastrous had the oil caught fire,

The Rast mesting of 1878 took place on the 14th, 16th and 16th March, as provi- ously announced, before large numbers of spectators. The Manila Jockey Club has experienced a great loss by the death of Mr Oppel, one of the best jockeys and one who had always taken great interest this kind of sport; consequently the thro horses, Dadoso, Esperanza and Pandan, of which the decomand gentleman was the proprietor, were not allowed to raa at this meeting. His Axcellency the Governor-: General Moziones was unable to attend on the first two days through illness, but he honoured the meeting with his presence on the third day; during his absence H. E General Colomo presided and distri buted the prizes to the winno.s. Every thing passed most entisf.atorily and with From 5,000 to 4,000 plouls sugar of the Manila Yeugaris was offered by auction en the 14th, and only two lots of 200 plculs each (400 plouls) were sold at $8 per pioul the rest was bought in.

For several days there were celebration of high masses and Te Deum in different churches, with extensive illuminations by night by the different public institutions, in honour of the new Pope.

The Francisco Staraco arrived on March 11, the India and Mineres on 17, all from Hongkong. The Mount Lebanon arrived on the 14th from Swatow, and left again for Shanghai via Subio on the 18th.

The President and Fellows will feel the need of help and guidance in so novel an educational enterprise; but they do not doubt that your zaal in directing and furthering the undertaking will be equal to your discernment and energy in starting it. Believe me, dear Sir, with much regard,

Very truly yours,

CHARLES W. ELIGT.

4 Social Sketch for whom it most concerns.) SOENE-4 Vista of public and other build-

ings in course of crection, in the centre of which a Genial Contractor is discovered finishing a simple sum in short addition. Watching him with interest, right and left, several British Delegates. In the background a crowd of enlightened Con- tinental, Asiatic, and other Foreigners, accompanied by Enterprising Agents. Genial Contractor (putting down his slate with an amiable smile). It comes out as I stated, my worthy fellows. Allowing myself Bar Silver, 17, data. The sum is English Sovereigns, not large, I grant you, and will barely admit Australian Sovereigns, ... of your living in the style of Government Discount, Olerks-still it will be regularly forthcoming,
