Hundreds of thousands of people take part in a wide range of celebrations to welcome the new millennium. The Chief Executive presides at a Millennium Extravaganza held in the centre-field at the Happy Valley racecourse, in conjunction with an evening race meeting, and presents the trophy to the owners of the winning horse in the special Millennium Cup event held at 12.45 am on January 1.
The Government's Central Co-ordinating Centre on the Year 2000 issue is in operation during the rollover but no incidents are reported in the first hours of the new millennium.
