OPERATIONAL REVIEW
Upon successful completion of the trial at the end of 1996, smart card equipment will be installed on the
Company's cross harbour buses. Within the current contract for the supply of smart card equipment, the
Company can exercise an option to acquire additional equipment for installation on the MTR feeder bus
services. The decision on whether or not to take up this option will be made after evaluating the
performance of the system during the trial period.
Installation of Safety Measures in Buses
A number of safety features were introduced on the Company's buses in 1995 to further improve our bus
service. New buses put into service after September 1995 are equipped with sensitive door edges. When
the exit door edges meet an obstacle upon closing, they will immediately re-open. This feature will
enhance the safety of alighting passengers. Investigations are being carried out into the possibility of
retro-fitting this feature onto buses in service prior to 1995.
In addition, a pre-warning system is being installed on the entire bus fleet. This consists of a visual display
and an audible signal to alert passengers that the bus exit door is closing. Installation work began in
November 1995 and will be completed by June 1996.
Other safety devices, including closed circuit television and light sensors, are under consideration.
Shelter Provision Programme
The Company's programme to build new aluminium bus shelters continued this year. In comparison to
the older shelters, the new design looks slimmer without sacrificing sheltering space. The improved appearance is achieved from the combined effect of the shelters' new column depth/width ratio and the introduction of circular fascia. In addition, more information for passengers will be available at the
passenger shelters through the installation of innovative rotary display boards.
INFORMATION SERVICES
Area-based Route Maps
Six area-based route maps were published and widely distributed during the year to provide clearer, up
to date information to regular customers and to promote KMB's services to occasional riders and visitors.
The excellent response to our initiative has resulted in our preparation of a comprehensive route booklet
for distribution in 1996.
