CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT
Although this gives an average increase of 19% in the fare level, it is expected to generate only 15% increase in revenue due to a shift of some passengers to other modes of transport after the increase in fares.
LABOUR SHORTAGE
As a result of the recent economic boom, Hong Kong suffered a general labour shortage in 1988 and indications are that this shortage will continue to be a serious/problem for the Territory in 1989.
KMB is one of Hong Kong's biggest
employers with over 10,000 workers. Fortunately, the staff shortage in 1988 was manageable. However, bust
captains have been lured away by the
booming trucking and tourist industries,
and mechanics and apprentices
attracted to work elsewhere by higher
pay or a better working environment. KMB is now suffering from a worsening shortfall in labour which will endanger
the Company's ability to provide an adequate bus service to the public if it cannot be resolved.
To ease the problem, KMB is
embarking on a pilot scheme to recruit
women to be trained to drive the
small air-conditioned single deck buses.
Every effort is being made to
employ more bus captains and
mechanics. However, if the local labour
market is such that sufficient numbers
of workers cannot be recruited, as a last resort it may be necessary to recruit workers from outside Hong Kong to cover the shortage.
