Prohibitions : Letters; charged butane gas lighters and refills; coin, currency notes, jewellery, pearls, precious stones and imitation precious stones, securities payable to bearer, valuables; literature of a communistic nature; textiles and clothing, except that worn clothing may be sent if accompanied by a certificate of disinfection from a competent authority and authenticated by an Argentine consular officer (parcels containing worn clothing should not be sent frequently to the same addressee); tobacco, except amounts not excceding 5 U.S. dollars in value sent as gifts. (Sec Note on Gift Parcels).

Restrictions apply to the importation of: Arms; drugs; plants and seeds.

Gift Parcels containing any type of merchandise may be sent to private persons provided that

(a) the value of the contents does not exceed $ U.S. dollars.

(b) they are for the personal use of the addressee and not intended for resale. (c) not more than one parcel containing the same type of merchandise is sent

each year to the same addressee.

The contents of gift parcels are subject to ordinary customs duties but are exempted from import surcharges if the value does not exceed 5 U.S. dollars. Parcels containing merchandise valued between 3-10 U.S. dollars may be admitted at the discretion of the Argentine Customs but are subject to a 200 per cent surcharge in addition to ordinary customs duties. Gift parcels must be clearly marked "obsequio para persona particular”.

Invoice: A consular invoice, of which a copy must be attached to the relative despatch papers, is required for each consignment of merchandise except for the following goods which must however be accompanied by a Certificate of Origin:-

(a) printed matter, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.;

(b) non-commercial consignments up to the value of U.S. $5;

(c) samples up to the value of 550 Argentine pesos sent to any commercial firms

registered with the Customs in Buenos Aires.

Packing: Insured parcels should be packed in outer covers of canvas or similar material. Each article of celluloid or roll of film must be packed, separately, see Packing and Make-up-Parcels in Section I of this Guide.

Charges: A fiscal charge of three Argentine pesos is levied, in addition to customs or other charges, on each parcel or consignment of parcels covered by one set of despatch papers.

Delivery: Parcels are not delivered to the place of address. Addresses normally have to collect them from the nearest Customs depot, but may arrange for collec- tion from the Post Office of destination. A charge for handling is levied at the time the parcels are handed over.
